Atelier: Medieval Illumination

My work painting medieval illuminations is a great treasure for me to experience and share. I have learned this art from the master illuminator, Renaud Marlier and his delightful wife, also a master. He has taught me to use the techniques and materials which were used in the medieval period. The process of painting an illumination is a journey of discovery which is one that must be followed with discipline, carefully heeding, with utmost patience, what the lines and colors teach. It is a meditation which cannot be rushed it the beauty is to unfold in luminous clarity. I begin with preparing the parchment. This is done by making it supple in water and then streching it to dry on a board. The first lines of the design are transfered carefully from the sketch onto the parchment. If there is to be calligraphy in the work, this is done first. The gilding follows. I gild mostly on a base of gum ammoniac which comes from a tree native to Iran. It is also possible to do a "mirror gilding" which is achieved by laying the gold with fish glue over a raised base of gesso then burnishing it with an agate or hemitite stone. When the gilding is complete, the first layers of colors are painted. I use all natural pigments - organic and inorganic, stones, plants, earths etc. - and use an ancient recipe to bind them of gum arabic, honey water and egg glair. Since blue and red (lapis and minium) were considered the noble colors (being at that time the most expensive - except for true purple - they are applied first. The layers are built up very thinly and transparently to keep the colors' jewel-like qualities. When sufficient colors have been applied, shading is done and highlights added using white or shell gold (a mixture of fine pure gold powder and gum arabic) are added. While at university, he sang in rock bands, joining the R&B group the Gas Board, which also featured bassist Graham Simpson. Ferry and Simpson decided to form their own band toward the end of 1970, eventually recruiting Andy Mackay (saxophone), who had previously played oboe with the London Symphony Orchestra. Through Mackay, Brian Eno joined the band. By the summer of 1971, the group -- had originally been called "Roxy" but a name change was necessary after the discovery of an American band called Roxy -- had recruited classical percussionist Dexter Lloyd and guitarist Roger Bunn through an ad in Melody Maker; both musicians left within a month, but they did record the group's initial demos. Another ad was placed in Melody Maker, and this time the group landed drummer Paul Thompson and guitarist Davy O'List, who had previously played with the Nice. O'List left by the beginning of 1972 and was replaced by Phil Manzanera, a former member of Quiet Sun. Prior to recording their first album, Simpson left the band. Roxy Music never replaced him permanently; instead, they hired new bassists for each record and tour, beginning with Rik Kenton, who appeared on their eponymous debut for Island Records. Nearly two years after the release of Flesh Blood, Roxy Music returned in the summer of 1982 with Avalon. Marking a new level in the group's production and musical sophistication, Avalon became their biggest album, spending three weeks at the top of the British charts and 27 on the U.S. charts, generating the British hits "More Than This" and "Take a Chance With Me." It became the group's only American gold album, and over the years, it worked its way to platinum status. Following a successful supporting tour for Avalon, the group released the live EP Musique/The High Road in the spring of 1983. The Avalon tour turned out to be Roxy Music's final activity as a group. Ferry began to concentrate on his solo career, beginning with 1985's Boys and Girls. Manzanera and Mackay formed a band called the Explorers in 1985; the pair would record under a variety of guises, as well as pursue solo careers, over the next 15 years. The compilation Street Life: 20 Great Hits, which also featured Ferry's solo hits, was released in 1989. A year later, Heart Still Beating, a live album documenting a 1982 concert, was released.

The "Afro-Asian sub-races were specifically created to be their slaves" and "serve the Annunaki by providing them with food, drink and habitation" while these rulers "spent a great deal of time drinking wine and quarrelling". These theories are nothing more than an elaboration of Blavatsky's "Atlantean Master Race" jargon, but take into account the discovery of Sumerian myths on clay tablets in the 1920's. Zecharia Sitchen, a self-proclaimed "expert" on these tablets, perhaps unconsciously reveals the true motive of these beliefs when he translates that "the Annunaki Gods created the Black Headed people (Sumerians) to mine for gold in South Africa". Startlingly, his translations were recently validated during a meeting with senior Vatican official Monsignor Corrado Balducci, a member of the Curia and Cardinal Ratzinger's ultra-conservative Congregation of the Faith. It is ironic that following the publication of his book Gardner was expelled from his position as Chancellor of the Dragon Court by Prince Nicholas de Vere. One may think this was because Gardner dropped the ball and told all, but this is not the case. Sovereign Grand Master de Vere was angry that he had not been given proper credit for these alarming revelations of exactly what goes on in the minds of the power elite. De Vere surprisingly claims to be the true author of the work, having provided archival information and documents to Gardner from the Royal vaults of the Dragon Court, proving that this belief system has been handed down generation to generation through the ages. Now reaching bizarre proportions, De Vere has set up his own website to further educate the "flim flam peasant stock masses" about the "health benefits of Satanism and Vampirism".

Despite several traps they manage to find the city, but rising flood waters force them to leave. In the last room before the exit, a mechanism requires one person to stay behind while the others could leave. Mitch forces everyone to let him go first by threatening to kill Abigail with a knife, and a terrified Ben agrees to stay behind. However, rising water forces Mitch to be the last person left. Ben tries to help him out, but Mitch cannot come to Ben without the door closing. Mitch decides to sacrifice himself and allow the others to escape the flooding cavern, and Ben agrees to give him credit for finding the treasure. Ben clears his family's name with the discovery and is cleared of all charges when the President tells everyone that Ben saved his life after the door to the tunnel closed accidentally. Ben also ensures Mitch receives joint credit for the find. The President then asks Ben about what he read on page 47 of the Book of Secrets, to which Ben replies, "It's life altering, sir!"
