The Gold Market (Souk ad-Dahab) is a narrow covered passage located in Gaza's old city that serves as both a center for gold trade and purchase, but also cash exchange.[1] It is situated along the southern edge of the Great Mosque of Gaza,[2] along the main Omar Mukhtar Street.

History

The Gold Market was built in 1476 CE by Gazan judge Sheikh Shams ad-Din al-Himsi under Mamluk rule of Palestine. It originally formed a part of a much bigger covered market, but most of the area was destroyed by the British Army during World War I.[2]

Normally, in the 20th-21st century, the market has been mainly visited by "to-be" spouses to pick out gold jewelery or by mother-in-laws to purchase gifts for their daughter-in-laws. However, due to the recent food shortages in Gaza because of Israel's blockade of the Gaza Strip, the Gold Market has been mainly used by elderly Gazans selling off family heirlooms for cash.[2]
